Interesting Notes for This Project

Homeowner Request

I would like to request a home renovation that embraces a cave-like aesthetic, with soft, flowing lines and minimal use of sharp 90-degree corners. The design should evoke a cozy, desert-inspired atmosphere, using earthy tones and textured materials that create warmth and comfort. I envision a space that feels inspired by Scandinavian minimalism but with a more grounded, natural feel—focusing on organic shapes and tactile surfaces like stone, wood, and clay. There should be a sense of intimacy and enclosure throughout the home, with rooms that feel cocoon-like and inviting, creating a retreat from the outside world.

How We Overcome The Design Challenges

To address the homeowner’s desire for a cave-style design while maintaining functionality, we incorporated strategically designed beams into the high ceiling. These beams not only accentuate the room’s height but also introduce a sense of warmth and structure to the open space. By curving the edges and softening the corners, we ensured that the beams align with the organic aesthetic the homeowner envisioned. The result is a dynamic yet cohesive design that feels expansive and natural, perfectly blending the desert-inspired Scandinavian theme with practicality.

In the living room, we introduced archways and niches to enhance the flowing, cave-like ambiance. The archways serve as smooth transitions between rooms, echoing natural forms found in caves, while the niches offer both a decorative and functional purpose. These built-in alcoves provide display areas for pottery, plants, or books, aligning with the homeowner’s love for earthy tones and textures. The intentional curves in the design eliminated harsh lines, creating a space that feels cozy and inviting yet modern and clean.

The foyer posed a unique challenge due to its oversized layout. To make the most of this area, we designed a double-storage system that maximizes functionality while maintaining a seamless aesthetic. This solution balances the need for practicality with the minimalist design goals. For the daughter’s room, we recommended a versatile approach by choosing an off-the-shelf bunk bed. This allows the furniture to adapt as she grows, providing flexibility for future updates. This thoughtful planning ensures the space evolves with the family’s needs, maintaining both style and practicality.
